HOW TO PREPARE FOR ORAL SURGERY
If you require oral surgery, please consider the following instructions on how to prepare for your visit and your home care after surgery.
CONSULT WITH SUNSET PARK ORAL SURGERY
A consultation visit is an opportunity for you to find out information about what procedure you may need.
Surgery on the same day of your consultation visit may be an option. If you are interested in having surgery the same day, please see below for further instructions.
PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR ORAL SURGERY WITH IV ANESTHESIA
If you are planning to receive IV anesthesia/sedation:
- Please refrain from eating and drinking for 8 hours prior to your surgery
- You may have small sips of water to take medications as necessary. If you are diabetic and are not eating prior to your surgery, please refrain from taking your oral diabetes medications (for patients taking insulin, please call the office for further instructions or consult with your primary care physician regarding any adjustment of your insulin dosing prior to surgery). For any other questions regarding medications on the day of surgery please call the office.
- Please arrange to have an escort who is at least 18 years of age
- Please note that you cannot drive for 24 hours after IV anesthesia
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding please call the office for further information
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE DAY OF SURGERY
- It is recommended for you to brush and floss your teeth prior to your appointment
- Do not smoke at least 12 hours before your oral surgery
- Wear short-sleeved, loose fitting clothing or long sleeves that can easily be rolled up above the elbow
- Avoid wearing light colored clothing
- Avoid wearing jewelry as you will be asked to remove earrings and necklaces while taking x-rays.
- Avoid wearing make-up and lipstick if possible
